No other state in this United States can boast the unusual and varied landscapes that Louisiana celebrates. All one needs do is take to the road from our own piney hills and woods in the northwest corner of the state and begin the trek south to see fields of corn, soybean or cotton turn to dark cypress-shrouded bayous winding their way to grassy prairies, then wind-swept coastal marshes and finally to the gritty streets of inner city New Orleans. Whether urban and rural, there is no place like Louisiana, and Author John Kemp has enlisted 37 of the state’s best artists to all express “their place" on canvas in his latest book, "EXPRESSIONS OF PLACE: The Contemporary Louisiana Landscape."
MAYFEST POSTER 2017
EXPRESSIONS OF PLACE- THE CONTEMPORARY LOUISIANA LANDSCAPE
Mary Louise Porter is among 37 artists chosen by John R. Kemp to be featured in his new book, Expressions of Place – the Contemporary Louisiana Landscape. Kemp writes, “Porter is a painter whose bright palette is guided as much by her imagination as it is by the colors of the seasons and the natural landscape of the Cane River and the glades and wooded hills of northwest Louisiana.”

Mary Louise Portera
Mary Louise Porter is a contemporary landscape painter and has been an Artist member of GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN for several years. This year she was selected to create an original work that would become the 2017 MAYFEST Festival Poster.
Her work represents a journey of memories and images drawn from landscapes seen in her travels as well as experienced in the American South where she was born and raised. Each work of art captures the emotion and beauty of the location expressed in her unique, interpretive style. Her colors used in paintings are intense, bold, and sometimes complex to demonstrate the energy visualized in the final outcome. This is especially true of Porter’s use of color and light in her own artwork.
Of this year’s MAYFEST poster, she noted: “As a child growing up in northwest Louisiana, one of my favorite times of the year was the spring, and it still is! The colors of nature seemed to burst forth from a long winter’s nap revealing a new color palette for me to explore. I loved walking in the daffodil fields, absorbing the colors and watching the wind swaying the flowers in a seemingly unending dance with nature. The tulips dotting the fields with the colors of the rainbow--red, yellow, purple, orange, and every variation in between--stood out among the green pine trees. To me the landscape was truly magical, and it was only natural for me to create a pastel depicting this mystical energy and brilliant color for the 2017 MAYFEST poster.” As Vernon Parish is the official "Wildflower Capital of Louisiana", this years' poster reflects that aspect of Spring in Vernon Parish.
Porter recently has been selected to represent the Cane River and Northwest Louisiana in John R. Kemp’s new book "Expression of Place- The Contemporary Louisiana Landscape". Her paintings were also featured in the November 2014 Louisiana Life magazine. Porter received a BFA and MFA in Painting from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She has participated in numerous artist residencies across the US and Costa Rica. Her work is also included in a number of galleries and other public and private collections nationwide.
Mary Louise will be on hand on Saturday May 6th at MAYFEST in the gallery signing copies of this year’s MAYFEST poster for the public.
